The firmware update on September 13th, 2016, disabled third-party ink cartridges in over fourteen million Helix printers overnight. Authored by a firmware engineer under the guise of a security patch, this update left numerous critical facilities, including chemotherapy clinics, inoperable and unaware of the impending disruption.
